Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn C. Cashe
On October 17, 2005, near Samarra, Iraq, Cashe’s Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Drenched in fuel but initially unhurt, he repeatedly entered the burning vehicle under enemy fire to rescue six soldiers and an Iraqi interpreter. Each time he emerged with another comrade, his uniform further ignited. Suffering burns over more than 70 percent of his body, Cashe refused evacuation until his men were safe. He died of his wounds three weeks later at Brooke Army Medical Center.
