Cpl. Jason Dunham

On April 14, 2004, near Karabilah, Iraq, Dunham’s squad encountered enemy fire during a reconnaissance mission. When an insurgent attacked and released a grenade, he placed his helmet and body over it to absorb the blast, saving at least two Marines. Gravely wounded, he died eight days later at the National Naval Medical Center. President George W. Bush presented the Medal of Honor to Dunham’s parents in 2007. The USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109) was commissioned in his honor in 2010. His story inspired books, documentaries, and the Marine Corps feature “The Gift,” which explores the lasting emotional impact of his sacrifice on comrades and family.
