Cpl. Desmond Doss

At Guam and Leyte, Doss earned two Bronze Stars for valor under fire. His defining moment came during the Battle of Okinawa’s Maeda Escarpment—nicknamed Hacksaw Ridge—where he repeatedly braved gunfire to rescue some 75 soldiers. Wounded multiple times by grenade and rifle fire, he treated others before accepting aid for himself. President Harry S. Truman presented him the Medal of Honor on October 12 1945 .
