Col. Lewis “Chesty” Puller
During campaigns in both the Pacific Theater of World War II and later in the Korean War, Puller led Marine units in sustained combat operations against numerically superior enemy forces. He repeatedly directed defensive actions under heavy fire and maintained unit cohesion during prolonged engagements in contested terrain. His leadership was characterized by consistent front-line presence during critical phases of combat operations. He later commanded forces during some of the most intense early engagements of the Korean War, where his units held defensive positions under extreme pressure.
